When is Ramadhan (Puasa) month in 2010?

Ramadhan (also written Ramazan, Ramzan, Ramadan, Ramdan, Ramadaan), the greatest religious observance in Islam, is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar. It is an annual Islamic month of Puasa (fasting), in which participating Muslims refrain from eating, drinking, as well as those in excess or ill-natured; from dawn until sunset.

Bulan Ramadhan / Bulan Puasa is the holiest months in the Islamic calendar. Fasting in the month of Ramadhan is one of the five pillars of Islam. While fasting in Islam is generally meant to teach the Muslim patience, modesty and spirituality, Ramadhan is a time for Muslims to fast for the sake of God and to offer more prayer than usual.

During Ramadhan, Muslims ask forgiveness for past sins, pray for guidance and help in refraining from everyday evils, and try to purify themselves through self-restraint and good deeds. Fasting during this month is often thought figuratively to burn away all sins. .

What are the dates for Ramadhan in 2010?

As compared to the solar calendar, the dates of Ramadhan vary, moving backwards about ten days each year as it is a moving holiday based on lunar movement. Ramadhan was the month in which the first verses of the Qur’an were said to be revealed to the Islamic Prophet Muhammad. The name came from the time before the Islamic calendar, when the month of Ramadhan fell in the summer.

In 2010, Ramadhan is expected to begin on or around 11 August 2010 and will finish on or around 9 September 2010, which will be proceeded with Lebaran / Hari Raya Idul Fitri (Aidil Fitri). It is however not a confirmed date, since only the Muslim organization in each particular country can declared the exact date of the festival, based on moon sighting.

South East Asian countries like Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, and Brunei generally share common dates for Bulan Ramadhan / Puasa and Hari Raya Idul Fitri, however other countries might celebrate the festivals on slightly different day since it is based on moon sighting on each particular country.
